Why should I use a roulette betting strategy?

Roulette table
Online Roulette uses RNG to maintain fairness

A strategy is like a plan on how to pick your bet and decide on the size of the wager. It helps you manage the game’s house edge and protect your bankroll.

For a beginner, it serves as a guide to play conservatively while aiming for decent payouts.

Can one roulette strategy to win ensure me a victory?

Roulette is one of those casino games that is completely random. In physical casinos, the croupier spins the wheel and allow to ball to gradually settle in one of the segments.

In online roulette, a software called the Random Number Generator (RNG) decides the results of each round. As such, it is impossible to predict the next winning bet. This is where a working online strategy helps you.

Although it will not guarantee a win every time you bet, a strategy helps you manage the game’s house edge. Also, it gives you a plan on how to set your bets to protect the bankroll.

Why actually play using roulette strategies?

A working strategy provides you information about the game, the bets, and their respective payouts. It also helps you address the game’s theoretical house edge.

Most popular roulette strategies

The web is full of resources related to roulette strategies. Some basic strategies and tips on roulette focus on understanding the rules, bets, and payouts. You will also find recommendations to know the different variants and their respective theoretical payouts. But most of these focus on how to plan one’s bets. Popular examples of betting strategies are the Martingale, Reverse Martingale, Fibonacci, D’Alembert, Reverse Alembert, and James Bond roulette strategy among others. Do not worry if some of these strategies are unfamiliar to you. We provide you with a brief description of each roulette betting strategy.

1. Martingale strategy

Among the widely used roulette betting strategies, the Martingale strategy trick is the most popular. The idea behind this betting system is simple – just increase your bet after every loss! It rests on the idea that when you finally win, you earn what you have lost, and you can start betting the minimum again.

To explain this roulette betting strategy, let us use a simple game of ‘heads and tails’ using a bankroll of $10.

If you are always betting ‘Tails’ with using $1 as your wager:

First Game bet First Game resultFirst game money wagerBudget amount
TailsTails 1$11
Game betSecond Game resultMoney wagerBudget amount
Tails Heads1$10
Game betThird Game result Game money wagerBudget amount
TailsTails2$12

2. Reverse Martingale strategy

The Reverse Martingale is also called the Paroli and arguably one of the oldest betting strategies. It is based on the Martingale betting system, but instead of increasing your bet in every loss, you need to double the wager after every win. Again, you start with a base bet and continue flat betting until you win. If it happens, you double the size of your wager on the next spin. If you lose, you restart the system.

Again, we can use the basic ‘Heads and Tails’ game to illustrate this betting strategy.

First Game bet First Game resultFirst game money wagerBudget amount
HeadsHeads1$11
Game betSecond Game resultMoney wagerBudget amount
HeadsHeads2$13
Game betThird Game result Game money wagerBudget amount
HeadsTails4$9

3. Fibonacci strategy

Fibonacci is an example of a negative progressive betting system for roulette. For this roulette betting strategy, your bet follows the Fibonacci sequence, such as: 1 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 5 – 8 – 13 – 21 and so on.

The idea behind this strategy is to win more, as you will have bigger stakes when winning than when losing.

If you lose, continue betting following the series. But if you win, just move back two numbers and use it as a guide for the next bet.

Let us try the same game with a base bet of $1.

First Game bet First Game resultFirst game money wagerBudget amount
HeadsTails1$9
Game betSecond Game resultMoney wagerBudget amount
HeadsTails1$8
Game betThird Game result Game money wagerBudget amount
HeadsTails1$7

4. The D’Alembert Roulette Strategy

Another popular betting strategy in roulette is the D’Alembert.  In the D’Alembert roulette strategy, you begin with a base wager and increase your stake by one unit after a loss. And if you win in a round, you decrease your wager by one bet unit.

Let us assume that our base stake is $2:

First Game bet First Game resultFirst game money wagerBudget amount
TailsHeads 2$8
Game betSecond Game resultMoney wagerBudget amount
TailsTails4$12
Game betThird Game result Game money wagerBudget amount
HeadsHeads2$14

5. Contra D’Alembert System

If you are after an online roulette betting strategy that minimizes potential losses, then the Contra D’Alembert is best. It is a positive progression betting system that requires you to increase your bet after a win and reduce it after a loss.

If you are going to use this in the popular ‘Heads and Tails’ game, then you may check the following hypothetical results:

First Game bet First Game resultFirst game money wagerBudget amount
HeadsHeads 2$12
Game betSecond Game resultMoney wagerBudget amount
HeadsTails4$8
Game betThird Game result Game money wagerBudget amount
HeadsHeads2$10

6. The James Bond Betting Strategy

Inspired by the James Bond character, these betting plans require 20 units of stake. These bets are placed on a selection of sections and numbers on the betting table. The idea here is to cover as many outcomes as possible to ensure long-term profitability. In the James Bond roulette strategy, most sections are covered, except the numbers 1 to 12.

If you are going to follow this approach, then you need to consider a few tips:

Roulette Facts
Players should always keep an eye out for the House Edge
  1. Start with a betting unit, say $1.00.
  2. The greatest stakes are on the outside bets. We recommend that you bet 14 units on outside bets from 19 to 36 which pays 1:1.
  3. Your five units are for the inside bets, on the 6-line bet.
  4. Wager one unit on a single number that offers odds of 35/1.

7. Fisher roulette strategy

Another popular way to bet on roulette is through the Fisher method. Compared to other betting strategies, the Fisher roulette strategy focuses on even-money bets, like even/odd, red/black, or high/low. Here, you continue betting on even-money bets and adjust only when you lose.

Let us assume that your bet with $1 as your base unit and a budget of $10:

First Game bet First Game resultFirst game money wagerBudget amount
HighHigh $1$11
Game betSecond Game resultMoney wagerBudget amount
RedRed$1$12
Game betThird Game result Game money wagerBudget amount
OddOdd$1$13

8. Labouchere System

One of the best things about adopting a roulette strategy is that it allows the player to be creative. An example of an approach that relies on creativity is the Labouchere system, a negative progression betting system. This means you increase your wager after losing a bet.

To play the Labouchere, you need to write first a sequence of numbers, say: 1-2-3. Your potential profit for each cycle is equal to the total value in the sequence, which translates to $6 in this example.

Each time you make a bet, it should be equal to the sum of the first and last numbers in the sequence, in this case it is $4. If you win, just remove the first and last numbers in your sequence. If you lose, just add the amount wagered to the end of the sequence.

In short, if you win, just cross the numbers. If you lose, just add this number (wager) to the end. For the next wager, just stake the combined value of the first and last numbers.

So, what happens if only one number remains? Well, you need to stake that amount.

First Game bet First Game resultFirst game money wagerBudget amount
TailsHeads$4$6
Game betSecond Game resultMoney wagerBudget amount
TailsTails$5$11
Game betThird Game result Game money wagerBudget amount

9. Reverse Labouchere System

As the name suggests, this strategy is just the opposite of the Labouchere system. In short, this online roulette betting strategy is a positive progression betting approach where you increase your bet when winning. Again, you start with a sequence of numbers whose total value acts as the potential profit for each system.

First Game bet First Game resultFirst game money wagerBudget amount
Tails Tails$4$14
Game betSecond Game resultMoney wagerBudget amount
HeadsHeads$2$13

10. Andrucci System

Among the top betting strategies, the Andrucci betting system is one of the most entertaining. Before you make random bets, you should watch first the results of the first 30 spins of the wheel and look for hot numbers.

Once you have completed this, you then put the luckiest straight-up bet and stick with it until the 25th spin or until you win. Once you have reached the target, you start again.

First Game bet First Game resultFirst game money wagerBudget amount
HeadsTails$1$9

Game betThird Game result Game money wagerBudget amount

11. Paroli System

The Paroli is another popular betting strategy among players in top casinos in Pennsylvania. It is a positive progressive betting approach where you double your wager after a win, and best for even-money bets. Under this betting system, you stop betting after three wins.

To illustrate this system, we use the same game with a base stake of $1:

HeadsTails$1$9
Game betSecond Game resultMoney wagerBudget amount
HeadsHeads$1$9
Game betThird Game result Game money wagerBudget amount
